Honda said yesterday that it’s investing $23 million dollars and hiring 50 new workers to build the 2014 Accord Hybrid sedan at the company’s Marysville, Ohio, facility. The automaker said that the Accord hybrid would be the third Honda hybrid built in the U.S., and the first at its Ohio plant.
The Marysville Auto Plant is undergoing an expansion of 95,000-square-feet to house assembly processes and logistics specifically for production of the hybrid. In the last three years Honda says it has invested more than $800 million into its Ohio manufacturing facilities.
The hybrid Accord joins the Accord Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) as part of Honda’s alternative fuel vehicles family; however, the PHEV is built in Sayama, Japan. During the 2012 L.A. Auto Show Honda stated that the Accord PHEV is rated for 115 miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent (MPGe), leading Honda to say the Accord PHEV has the highest rating in its class.
Both the Accord Plug-In and Accord Hybrid utilize a 2.0-liter i-VTEC four-cylinder Atkinson cycle engine paired with a 124-kilowatt (kwh) traction electric motor that can function as an electric continuously variable transmission (e-CVT) and as a 105-kwh electric motor.
Honda says the Accord Hybrid will go on sale this fall. Pricing hasn’t yet been announced.
“With more than 30 years of continuously building eight generations of the Honda Accord close to our customers, our team now is using its experience and flexibility to add this sophisticated Accord Hybrid model,” said Jeff Tomko, plant manager of the Marysville Auto Plant. “At the same time, we are continuing with our commitment to manufacture new models in Ohio, along with the resulting growth in jobs.”
