Like most major municipalities hurting for dollars these days, Los Angeles is on the look out for ways to save, or at least break even. In the city’s crosshairs is free parking for electric vehicles (EV) at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
For more than 10 years EVs parked for free – up to 30 days at a time – at the airport, but that’s about to change.
The airport recently posted a notice on its Web site informing EV users that starting March 1, 2013 EVs will have to pay posted parking rates.
Notices announcing the upcoming change are also being left on vehicles parked in the currently fee-free spaces.
According to the Wall Street Journal, what was once an incentive meant to encourage use of alternative fuel vehicles, free EV parking at LAX has now become a frenzied search by EV and hybrid drivers for an available space, and is no longer a sustainable financial model for the city.
If EV drivers were to completely fill both lots that are free to them, the airport could lose $120,000 a day, totaling $44 million a year.
“No one understands why we’re doing this – especially in today’s economy,” airport spokeswoman Nancy Castles said of the soon to be terminated free parking to the Journal. Not even handicap parkers are exempt from fee-based parking at LAX according to Castles.
Charging stations at LAX are available in parking structures 1 and 6 on the arrivals level only.
