Volkswagen today announced it will introduce in Europe its updated and more fuel-efficient all-wheel-drive version of the Golf using its 4MOTION system.
Two turbo diesel variants are among the three 4MOTION Golfs that overall promise 15 percent lower fuel consumption, according to VW, which noted also the latest all-wheel-drive Golfs continue a tradition of such configurations begun in 1986.
The latest models are available as four-door vehicles only, and follow introduction of front-wheel-drive versions launched at the end of 2012. The all-wheel versions use an enhanced fifth-generation Haldex coupling, VW sais, observing the all-wheel-drive system is sophisticated and computer controlled, naturally, sheds 1.4 kg over the previous iteration, and requires no pressure accumulator for quick reaction times.
Three specification levels will be offered the fortunate Europeans able to acquire one of the 4MOTION Golfs. These are the Trendline, Comfortline, and Highline.
The diesels come equipped with a common-rail four-cylinder generating 77 kw/105 PS and 110 kw/150 PS. Fuel economy is rated at 4.5 / 4.7 liters of fuel respectively per 100 kilometers.
Other fuel saving tricks include stop/start and regenerative braking. All models have technologies including VW’s four-wheel EDS (electronic differential locks on both axles), the XDS front and rear axle transverse lock, the electronic stabilization program, an Automatic Post-Collision Braking System.
Standard safety features include daytime running lights, seven airbags and on board is a multi-function info display with touch screen option.
The all-wheel-drive upgrade will cost €1,800 ($2,400) more than the front-wheel-drive version in Germany, Volkswagen said.
