The HybridCars.com monthly sales dashboard is a collaboration of HybridCars.com and Baum & Associates, a Michigan-based market research firm focusing on automotive issues including the hybrid and electric vehicle market.
Overall sales declined modestly from May to June, although the sales rate is the highest it has been since 2007. Hybrid sales were down from last month, but well ahead of year-ago levels. For the year, hybrids are doing much better than the overall market. Plug-in sales are of course doing far better than the overall market as this segment is in a growth phase. Diesel sales grew at a greater rate than the overall market compared to last month and year-ago.
The Volt had a very good month and it was the leading player among the plug-in vehicles available. The Leaf continued its recent results of over 2,000 sales monthly. We estimate a slight reduction in Model S sales, primarily because European sales will begin soon and volumes are being shipped there to meet orders and supply dealers with display models. The Chevy Spark entered the market this month and volumes will of course increase. The Honda Fit EV sold over 200 last month. While that is not a high number, the incentives on the vehicle have led to more interest and in fact is hard to find given that limited volumes of this product are being made.
The Prius (in its various varieties) fell as compared to May, but the Liftback enjoyed strong growth from year-ago levels. The same is true for the Camry hybrid. Although the Fusion Hybrid had a modest month, it did well relative to year-ago as well as on a year-to-date basis.
Initial sales of the Chevy Cruze diesel appeared in June. The significantly higher cost (greater than expected in the view of many) of this product (relative to the gasoline version) is quite high, which may make GM’s goal of 20,000 annual sales difficult.
