/>
The Sunswift solar car racing program at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia recently debuted their revolutionary new solar racer “eVe.”

The eVe is aimed at demonstrating long-term ecological sustainability.

The students who volunteer their efforts to Sunswift created eVe in the hopes of capturing another team championship at the 2013 World Solar Challenge (WSC) – known as the pinnacle event for solar racing.

At this year’s WSC taking place in October, teams from top universities and private institutions around the world will compete in a 3,000 km race across Australia’s Outback from Darwin to Adelaide relying solely on the sun’s energy to power their cars.

This year, eVe races in the ‘cruiser’ class, a class that rewards entrants for incorporating practical motoring features into their advanced solar technology vehicles.

Sunswift has teamed with ToyLabs to impart these invaluable science lessons to school kids.

The Sunswift team uses ToyLabs’s Volta Racer to share their passion and to inspire future generations of scientists and engineers through a series of hands-on workshops located at the University of New South Wales Engineering School and at various location en-route to WSC.

ToyLabs said during the workshops kids get to build the Volta Racer and learn about Sunswift’s work on eVe. UNSW engineering student and Sunswift Project Director Alex To went so far as to liken the Volta Racer to a “miniature version of the car we build. Both vehicles, in fact, use the same direct solar to power conversion methods to provide electricity to their motors. The Volta Racers allow these kids to have a practical hands-on experience building their very own electric car while learning about basic mechanical engineering, electronics and using solar as a sustainable energy application.”

ToyLabs founder Tim Curley explained that his company is honored to lend support to Sunswift’s efforts.

“ToyLabs wants to help inspire kids to become the world’s next generation of scientists and engineers – just like the extremely bright students at UNSW working on eVe,” said Curley. “The eVe team’s important work on eVe is already impacting the way in which automotive designers, manufacturers and consumers think about the use of sustainable energy resources for powering vehicles. The team’s use of the Volta Racer to help impart these invaluable lessons to school kids is just what we’d imagined when we developed the Volta Racer. We hope school teachers and parents alike will adopt into their own curriculums these kinds of practical hands-on learning experiences for their students and kids. If we can help teachers and parents impart these important lessons in a way that is fun and exciting – then we’re doing a good thing.”

>[embedded content]

California-based ToyLabs said it designs and develop innovative learning experiences in science and technology for kids. It described its commitment as to inspire and enrich young minds with fun-filled yet purposeful scientific “toys” that also serve as proactive tools with which educators and parents can actively engage children in the learning process.

Posted in News, Related Technologies

Tagged as 2013 world solar challenge, Australia, California, automobile construction to improve fuel economy is also the best way to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions, according to a new study by the United States Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

“As the U.S. works to reduce dependence on foreign oil, promote clean energy and combat climate change, this report definitively documents why aluminum offers the most promise for cutting total automotive-related carbon emissions and energy use,” said ORNL’s Sujit Das, expert on product lifecycle assessments.

The ORNL study modeled a typical 2012 crossover SUV reflective of the average on-the-road vehicle in the U.S. in terms of weight, performance, fuel economy and materials mix of steel, high-strength steel and aluminum.

Building on an earlier crossover SUV study by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (Light-Duty Vehicle Mass Reduction and Cost Analysis — Midsize Crossover Utility Vehicle, Aug 2012), ORNL researchers analyzed a baseline SUV (a comprehensive mix of mild and high- strength steel), a lightweight steel vehicle (optimized for maximum use of high-strength and advanced high-strength steel), and a lightweight aluminum intensive vehicle (including currently available body, doors, trunk and hood applications).

“This study adds even more evidence that switching car bodies from steel to aluminum is the next logical step for car makers to take in the drive to reduce emissions,” said Randall Scheps, chairman of the Aluminum Association’s Transportation Group (ATG) and automotive marketing director for Alcoa, Inc. “There is already ample evidence that aluminum is a safe, durable and cost effective material for car bodies. Now ORNL has shown that aluminum is better than steel on a full lifecycle CO2 basis. That is the icing on the cake.”

Highlights from the ORNL study include (as listed by the ORNL):

Reducing vehicle weight with aluminum can result in the lowest total vehicle lifecycle environmental impact – cradle-to-grave – as compared to both traditional and advanced steels.

An aluminum-intensive vehicle can achieve up to a 32 percent reduction in total lifecycle energy consumption, and up to a 29 percent reduction in CO2 emissions, compared to a typical vehicle on the road today which uses traditional and high-strength steel in the body construction.

While a lightweight steel vehicle has a lower production phase environmental impact, those initial gains are erased by higher energy use and carbon emissions during the steel vehicle’s use phase.

More than 90 percent of automobile energy consumption and carbon emissions occurs during the vehicle’s use phase, with the mining, production and manufacturing phases accounting for just 10 percent or less.

For an aluminum intensive vehicle, the breakeven point in its use phase for making up the energy consumed during the initial production phase is 9,300 miles – of which most automobiles on U.S. roads would reach in their first year of operation.

“The ORNL environmental report is timely as there is an increasingly loud aluminum buzz in the auto industry right now – and with good reason. Automakers are projecting to double aluminum use within less than a decade as high-volume, all aluminum vehicles move from design studios to showrooms in the not-too-distant future. We already knew aluminum offers great fuel economy, safety and performance advantages, and now it’s proven to be best positioned to cut greenhouse gasses and save energy too,” said Scheps.

The ORNL said modeling for this study conforms to internationally recognized standard practices (ISO 14040 and 14044). Comparative data sets used in the study were provided directly to ORNL researchers by the U.S. steel and aluminum industries respectively, both sets of which are current, peer-reviewed and publicly available. The Aluminum Association underwrote the effort.

The ORNL study is consistent with an earlier independent study by the magnesium industry which also concluded that aluminum has the smallest carbon footprint of competing materials when examining total lifecycle CO2 emissions.

Additional benefits of aluminum come from its recycling properties. Recycling aluminum saves 95 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions associated with primary aluminum production, and requires only 5 percent of the energy. Also, nearly 90 percent of automotive aluminum is recovered and recycled and aluminum is infinitely recyclable without degradation to the material.

Full study, facts, and other research about how aluminum in vehicles can be found on the www.drivealuminum.org website.

Posted in News

Tagged as aluminium, aluminum, aluminum subsidiary of Carroll Shelby International Inc. (CSBI:PK), has announced that the serial #1 2012 model year Shelby GT350 wide body convertible will cross the block at this year's Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas auction, taking place from September 26 – 28. The blue with white stripes wide body muscle car is slated to be auctioned before an international audience on Saturday, Sept. 28 (Lot #750). Shelby American will display some of its latest high performance vehicles during the event, and will offer rides to the public in the Shelby Focus ST, supercharged GTS and Shelby GT350 as a part of Ford Motor Company's Hot Lap ride experience.
"The Shelby GT350 is among the world's most collectible modern muscle cars," said John Luft, president of Shelby American. "Historically, the first car per model year was built for Carroll Shelby's personal collection. He was especially keen to own a convertible built during Shelby American's 50th anniversary. This very special Shelby GT350 wide body is set to cross the block in our hometown during Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas. So we're giving someone the chance to own this special piece of American history, just months before production of the legendary Shelby GT350 will end."

The modern Shelby GT350 is light, nimble and powerful. Beginning with the "small block" 5.0 liter Ford Mustang GT as its base, every aspect of the car is enhanced or replaced to create a balanced performance pony car true to the spirit of the 1960's era GT350.

For the 2012 model year, power options include a normally aspirated and two supercharged versions. A short throw shifter, one piece drive shaft, more powerful brakes, cooling enhancements and interior and exterior styling upgrades are also options. For the first time since 1970, Shelby American offered a convertible option and the Shelby GT350 scheduled for Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas is a 624 HP supercharged drop top with equipment such as massive Shelby brakes all around and the upgraded interior.

"We carefully documented the build of this car," said Shelby American Vice President of Production Gary Davis. In fact, if we had to put asterisks on the highly qualified answers for the 10 electric cars sold in America, we’d need asterisks for the asterisks.

But for those of you who grew up accustomed to quicker gratification – from such experiences as drive-in restaurants, and, well, quick-filling gas stations for example – the list is under “Recharge Times” below.

If you want an easy answer, go ahead and skip over the following qualifier sections if you dare.

Asterisks And More Asterisks

Are you still here? Cool. We’ll try to keep this simple and more interesting than the fine print for a credit card app, or what have you.

Rule number one is, assuming an “empty” battery, EV charge times depend on the kilowatt-hours (kwh) of the battery being charged, and how fast it will accept juice.

For example, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV has the smallest (16-kwh) battery and the Tesla Model S comes with the largest 60-kwh or 85-kwh battery.

All conditions being equal, a larger battery takes more energy, and this should mean a longer recharge time.

But we warned you answers need qualification. Believe it or not, in this case Tesla has figured a way for people at home to cram electricity back into its 4-5 times larger packs much faster than the i-MiEV, but we’ll explain this later.

Another factor to be mindful of is the electric current delivered by the charger. Actually, the “charger” is not the device with a cord you plug into the car. The “charger” is the on-board charger built into the car – often 3.3 kw, or 6.6, kw, and in the case of Tesla, 10 kw or a pair equaling 20 kw.

The rate at which the car’s on-board charger passes juice to the battery pack makes for an effective bottleneck. As a loose analogy, with a garden hose you can’t very easily water your lawn faster than the hose will allow, can you? So it is with the charger. It delivers electricity at a certain maximum rate, and that’s it.

Nissan Leaf with aftermarket charger installed.

(Of course if one were to retrofit a faster on-board charger, aside from voiding the warranty and possibly causing other problems, he or she might charge the car quicker, but we’ll leave this discussion at that).

And if these aren’t enough qualifiers for you, consider also the “EVSE” (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment). Often mislabeled the “charger,” these matter as do also the amount of volts and amps of the circuit it is plugged into.

To sort of level the playing field, our list below focuses on official manufacturer ratings for 240 volt – AKA “level 2″ or “220” volt – power fed through a “charger” (actually the blandly titled EVSE.)

EVSE

A 240-volt EVSE is something most EV owners choose to install. If you want to plug into 120-volt “house” current with the included cord, plan on it taking around a day and a night or longer to recharge a depleted battery.

EVSE units are basically a fancy switch with safety built in to prevent unfortunate things like you electrocuting yourself, or taking or delivering more power than would be copacetic.

They plug with a special multi-pin connector into the car – usually an SAE J1772, but Tesla (like Apple) which likes to “zig” when everyone else “zags” – has gone its own route with a proprietary plug and port, but offers adapters.

The EVSEs sold today vary in their maximum amperage and kilowatt output and thus can serve as another effective bottleneck.

Manufacturers typically quote level 2 recharge times based on the assumption that you are using the most potent 240-volt EVSE possible, often 30 amps with kilowatts varying.

If an EV can take more amps or kilowatts, that means they can replenish more “miles of range per hour” as Tesla puts it.

These details are not always spelled out in graphic detail by EV sellers, but the good news is it is not advanced astrophysics. When we asked every EV maker in America today to answer the same list of questions, we got varying degrees of transparency. Some did not know all the answers, some failed to even get back to us, and Fiat (Chrysler) took the cake as being the most crystal clear in its answers to the spirit of what we were asking.

“Amperes are everything when it comes to recharging. Charge time is directly proportional to amps,” replied Chrysler media rep Jiyan Cadiz. “A simple example would be, if you install the AeroVironment Level 2 EVSE (30 amp service) offered through Mopar on a 20 amp circuit, the charge time would be 1/3 slower (or 20 amps/30 amps = 2/3 max energy draw into the car).”

And we’ll add, if you buy a 15 or 25 amp EVSE and plug in a car set up for 30 amps or more, you have again effectively handicapped your recharge time.

On the other hand if your car can only accept 30 amps, and you plug in a 40-amp EVSE, software will limit the input, and it will charge no faster than at 30 amps.

We could go on and on adding qualifiers to this, but the simple answer is if you want fastest recharge times, the correct thing to do is to ask the automaker or a charging equipment supplier what’s the fastest way to go.

Among EVSEs, Tesla offers the most potent – its High Power Wall Connector (HPWC) – with up to 80 amps deliverable to cars with “twin chargers.”

This, by the way, is the answer to how Tesla at “level 2” can charge a Model S quicker than a Mitsubishi i-MiEV. The Tesla also costs around four times more, so go figure.

Tesla advertises that 62 miles range per hour gets added back to a Model S using its HPWC under ideal conditions of voltage, amperage and wire gauge size at minimal length. We know of one Model S Signature Performance owner who uses all 80 amps of his HPWC plugged into a dedicated 100-amp circuit, and gets only 54 miles per hour range.

Quicker Options

Beyond home charging, a few cars accept what’s called “level 3” or “DC Quick” charging. These expensive-to-install public EVSE deliver around 480 volts and a whole lot of amps. Tesla also has its public free “ superchargers.”

Final Note

If you plan to install a charger at home – for any brand EV – you will want to ensure the amperage of the line is up to the needs of the charging equipment, and ideally, use a “dedicated circuit.”

In other words, do not also run an air conditioner or clothes dryer on the same circuit, or this will limit the power to your car, and may even overload the circuit if it is not set up for this much draw.

EV Recharge Times

This list for U.S. market cars assumes the battery is fully drawn down to the point that its battery management system (BMS) has stopped the car.

All these EVs can be plugged into ordinary wall current, and some may be fine with that. Times list however are for the quickest level 2 recharge either estimated or as stated (often in ballpark terms) by the manufacturer.

For cars that specify a “preferred EVSE supplier” in most cases (except Tesla) it’s not required you go with only this supplier.

Honda Fit EV – under 3 hours

Its smaller 20-kwh battery recharges quickly with a fast 6.6-kw on-board charger at 32 amps.

House current recharge time is estimated at 15 hours. Level 3 is not now available.

Leviton is the preferred charger manufacturer.

60-kwh Tesla Model S – 3.35 hours

Going with Tesla’s “62 miles of range per hour” quoted recharge rate with its HPWC, the 208 miles EPA-rated range of the 60-kwh car should be replenished in 3.35 hours. This assumes the twin on-board chargers rated at 20 kw.

With only the single standard 10-kw onboard charger, or an EVSE rated at lower amps, times increase. Tesla quotes 31 miles of range per hour with level 2 and using its included Mobile Connector.

If Supercharger compatible, an 80-percent charge can take under 20 minutes. Preferred EVSE supplier for its proprietary charge port is, you guessed it, Tesla. For more details, check out Tesla’s Web page.

Ford Focus Electric – 3.6 hours

The Ford Focus Electric’s 6.6-kw onboard charger and 30 amps makes for a rapid recharge.

Level 1 recharge time is estimated at 18 hours, and the car does not accept level 3.

Ford’s preferred EVSE supplier is AeroVironment.

Nissan Leaf – less than 4 hours

The 2013 models now have a 6.6-kw on-board charger either standard or optionally, and accept a maximum 30 amps.

Previously the 3.6-kw charger was a bottleneck making recharge times for the 24-kwh battery closer to 7 hours. Preferred EVSE supplier is AeroVironment.

House current takes around 16 hours and a DC Quick Charge via a CHAdeMO port allows for 80-percent charge in an estimated 30 minutes or less.

Fiat 500E – less than 4 hours

Tied with Nissan’s time for level 2, the Fiat 500E also has a 24-kwh battery and 6.6-kw on-board charger.

Estimated charge time for level 1 is longer at 24 hours. Level 3 charging is not available.

AeroVironment is the preferred EVSE supplier.

85-kwh Tesla Model S – 4.27 hours

This one takes more asterisks than usual. Tesla likes to hedge answers, and indeed a lot of variables come into play.

The theoretically quickest time assuming Tesla’s “62 miles per hour” recharge rate with Tesla’s HPWC for its 265 miles EPA-rated range should be 4.27 hours with twin on-board chargers.

If Tesla’s “300” miles range often quoted is indicated on its range readout – and as mentioned, depending on your real-world recharge rate – time could be longer.

“A Supercharger can charge about half the battery in 20 minutes,” says Tesla.

If equipped with only one 10-kw on-board charger, max amperage is cut in half to 40 amps, and charge times go up commensurately.

The Model S touch screen for fully equipped models allows charging input from 5 amps to 80 amps (in single amp increment/decrement settings) with all home or public charge options.

If you wish to use only house current, recharging at 5 amps could take up to 52 hours, 24 minutes.

For a fuller idea of variables, we suggest perusing Tesla’s interactive Web page.

RAV4 EV – 6 hours

Toyota’s Tesla-powered EV is actually estimated at “5-6” hours with its preferred EVSE supplier Leviton delivering 40 amps and 9.6 kw. The RAV4 EV also comes with a 12-amp Level 1 cable, but the maker “strongly” recommends the Leviton level 2 unit and does not even quote how long it takes at level 1.

Note this unit delivers more power for the medium-large 42-kwh battery than other EVs can take and it still takes longer than most. If Tesla had outfitted it with Model S recharging technology, and even made it Supercharger compatible, that might have put this EV at the top of the list, but the omission is no surprise. Toyota estimates it will only produce 2,600 RAV4 EVs for California through the end of next year.

Smart ForTwo ED – 6 hours

The Daimler-made Smart ForTwo ED comes with a smallish 17.6-kwh battery and takes around 6 hours with a lower-capacity on-board charger.

House current recharging is estimated at around 14 hours, and charging from 20 percent to 80-percent takes around 10 hours.

Bosche is the preferred EVSE supplier.

Mitsubishi i-MiEV – 7 hours

The i-MiEV’s 16-kwh battery takes around 7 hours to recharge at level 2.

Mitsubishi is bold enough not only to offer the car in 50 states, it also confesses level 1 recharge time is 22.5 hours with the supplied cord.

The car also accepts DC quick charging via a CHAdeMO port that can replenish 80-percent charge in 30 minutes.

Chevrolet Spark EV – 7 hours

GM only gave its 21-kwh battery a 3.3-kw onboard charger, so its level 2 EVSE from preferred supplier Bosche delivering 30 amps takes longer.

The upside is a SAE combo DC fast charger promises to charge the battery to 80 percent in just 20 minutes.

Relevance?

For those who want to travel the farthest in a day, quicker options can mean less “range anxiety.”

For example, a Nissan Leaf zapped back mid-day with a quick charger, may travel 150 miles or more, if the owner is resourceful, or fortunate enough to have charging options.

Range for any EV can also be extended with any sort of intra-day charging, so speed can make a differnce.

Obviously many other factors play into whether an EV is a good decision, and this is not intended as any sort of buying guide.

However, if you were curious now you have all the US-market EV charge times in one spot, but remember, “your actual results may vary!”
Thomas mild-hybrid vehicles coming as Johnson Controls just unveiled its first-generation 48-volt Lithium-ion Micro Hybrid battery.

“We expect this technology to play an integral role in meeting aggressive fuel economy and emission reduction targets,” says Ray Shemanski, vice president and general manager of the Original Equipment Group for Johnson Controls Power Solutions.

Featuring a dual voltage architecture, Johnson Controls Micro Hybrid battery system involves a 12-volt starter battery and a 48-volt Lithium-ion battery that enables optimization of energy generation and consumption.

Per Johnson Controls, this technology has the potential to provide up to 15 percent fuel savings in vehicles and will be available for testing with key automotive customers in December.

“Micro Hybrid systems will be able to support the automotive industry’s needs at a much lower cost than hybrid or electric vehicles, and therefore, offer a mass-production solution that can be leveraged across our customers’ fleets,” said Shemanski.

Johnson Controls explained the 48-volt battery is designed with the capacity to quickly capture energy from braking and can support higher loads such as air-conditioning and active chassis technologies. The 12-volt battery will continue to provide power to the vehicle starter, interior and exterior lights, and entertainment systems such as radios and DVD players.

The prismatic Lithium-ion cells and complete systems for the Micro Hybrid battery prototypes will be made at Johnson Controls advanced manufacturing facility in Holland, Michigan.

Johnson Controls engineers designed the battery with standardized components and size to help drive scale and minimize cost.

“We expect that Micro Hybrid technology will be adopted in Europe first, due to more stringent fuel economy and emissions standards, and then quickly move to U.S. markets in the next few years with global adoption starting in 2020,” said Shemanski.

Johnson Controls is the maker of Varta automotive batteries; it is not known if this micro hybrid tech will be commercialized under the Varta brand, well known in Europe.

Posted in Hybrid, News, Technology

Tagged as 12-volt, 48-volt, 48-volt Lithium-ion Micro Hybrid battery, electrification, Johnson Controls, micro hybrid, mild-hybrid, varta

Related Readings

2014 Malibu With Stop-Start To Rely On AGM Battery

Chevrolet’s Malibu stop-start feature will rely on a Johnson Controls battery. successful trial of the 100 percent electric Nissan e-NV200 van as part of efforts to meet the highest levels of environmental responsibility across all areas of its operations.

This trial came after the end of a similar trial of the Nissan Leaf earlier this year.

The City Corporation – the local authority services provider for the ‘Square Mile’ – said it supports and promotes the City as the world’s leading international financial centre. In addition to the usual services a local authority would provide – such as housing and refuse collection – it looks after 350,000 daily commuters, 9,000 residents and nine million annual leisure and business visitors.

The City of London Corporation tested the vehicle on the streets of central London with, according to Nissan, universally positive feedback from all the drivers as they look to reduce costs and emissions in the City.

The e-NV200 was tested for a week by City of London Corporation, with fleet drivers and members of the senior management team successfully demonstrating the pioneering van can cover typical daily journeys on one charge.

“We are pleased to be one of the first organizations to trial the e-NV200 – and the feedback has been very positive,” said John Tomlinson, Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Port Health & Environmental Services Committee. “We also had access to the Nissan LEAF which was well received by our staff, so we had no hesitation in wanting to try the e-NV200. The drivers were impressed with its comfort and responsiveness.”

Nissan said with the rising cost of filling up at the pump, the 100 percent electric e-NV200 promises to help reduce running costs while also helping the environment by bringing CO2 emissions down to zero at the point of use.

“The e-NV200 is one of our most exciting developments in years and the trial with the City of London Corporation marked an important part of Nissan’s research and development process ahead of the vehicle’s 2014 launch,” said Barry Beeston, Nissan GB corporate sales director. “We now look forward to further developing a relationship with City of London Corporation over the coming months.”

Posted in Electric, News, Nissan

Tagged The i3′s body structure consists entirely of this lightweight and durable material, allowing the extra weight of the batteries for the electric drive system to be cancelled out.

By industrializing the manufacturing process for CFRP, BMW Group said it has become the first company worldwide to make its use in vehicle production economically viable.

At the Leipzig plant alone, some €400 million ($534 million) has been invested in new structures and machinery for the production of BMW i models and 800 new jobs have been created.

The production network for BMW i also sees key components for the BMW i3 manufactured at BMW Group plants and joint venture facilities at Moses Lake in the USA and Wackersdorf, Landshut and Dingolfing in Germany.

The company said it has invested a total of around €600 million in the BMW i production network and generated over 1,500 jobs.

Series production of the BMW i3 got under way today in the presence of the Minister President of the state of Saxony, Stanislaw Tillich, Mayor of Leipzig, Burkhard Jung, and BMW AG Board Member for Production, Harald Krüger.

The first BMW i3 off the line has been chosen as the lead car for the International Berlin Marathon on September 29 and was handed over to German marathon runner Jan Fitschen. Deliveries of the BMW i3 to customers in Germany and other European countries will begin in November, with the car’s launch in the USA, China and other markets to follow in early 2014.

“Today represents a milestone in our company’s development,” said BMW production chief Krüger. “We are making history with the BMW i3. Not only is our first electric car about to hit the road, we are also completely redefining sustainability with regard to personal mobility thanks to groundbreaking technologies and processes. We require 50 percent less energy and 70 percent less water, and source the electric energy for production of the BMW i models CO2-free from the wind turbines at the plant. This huge reduction in energy and water consumption can be attributed primarily to the elimination of the traditional painting process for steel and aluminium bodies.”

Posted in BMW, Carmakers, Carmakers, Market & Fleets, Compacts & Sedans, Electric, News

Tagged as BMW, bmw i, BMW i3, Electric Vehicle, EV, production

Related Readings

Canadian Leaf Sales More Than Double In February

Nissan has reported Canadian monthly sales and, at 5,635 total unit sales of all Nissan models, February

Microsoft UK Chooses Nissan’s Leaf EV

Two Nissan Leaf have been delivered to Microsoft UK. Elon Musk has been reported as saying the electric automaker wants to produce a car capable of operating on “auto-pilot” in the next three years.

Auto-pilot is the metaphorical term Musk uses for driverless, or autonomous vehicles, and in this case, an estimated 90-percent of control would be delegated to the car’s computer.

In throwing its hat in the ring, Tesla has joined Google, Daimler, Nissan, GM and others as it sets a more ambitious time frame over larger developers – and quicker than analysts’ estimates of 10-15 years until the technology is accepted fully.

Tesla’s online job board is currently advertising for someone to help lead “Tesla’s effort to pioneer fully automated driving.”

Unknown is how laws would be changed to allow for future cars running on “auto-pilot” and how consumers and the insurance lobby would respond.

Presently, the European Union requires cars to be under direct control of their operators. On the opposite extreme, in May 2012, Nevada issued Google’s driverless Prius a state driver’s license.

Pros and cons perceived by the insurance industry – as well as potential consumers – include concerns over whether the technology would be truly as safe and reliable as promoted.

A possible plus for the insurance industry is cars, unlike humans, could be programmed to always obey laws, and driverless vehicles may even earn a better track record than humans.

Long-term concerns by civil libertarians include whether human rights to operate their own vehicles might be eroded over coming years.

If a case could be made that driverless cars are actually able to operate with a better accident-free record, concerns are that a case could be made to limit humans permission to drive one step at a time.

Those in favor see the potential for the option to switch off their attention with no risk as a decided plus.
<br is based in California, has the most stores there, and sold nearly half of its Model S in the state this year, but the California New Car Dealers Association is now saying Tesla is benefiting from shoddy advertising practices.

While other state dealer trade groups have accused Tesla of violating franchise laws, in California the LA Times reports the EV maker allegedly misleads would-be buyers with details including how it calculates costs of its Model S.

For example, noted the dealer association, Tesla automatically deducts the $7,500 federal tax credit from its advertised price despite the fact not all buyers owe $7,500 in federal taxes, thus may not be able to recoup this benefit.

Tesla also touts the benefit of driving solo in California’s HOV lane without mentioning there is an application process involved, said the Times.

The dealer group said if a person checked every single box on Tesla’s Web site’s cost calculator for its high-five figure car, the monthly payment would drop to $114 per month. This, notes the Times, is lower than the $139 payment on the least expensive new car sold in the U.S, a Nissan Versa.

For Tesla to make it possible for consumers to estimate the monthly cost of a car costing upward of $71,000 as less than America’s lowest-priced car is bogus, says the dealer group.

“We would like the DMV to investigate whether Tesla has violated the law,” said Brian Maas, president of the California New Car Dealers Association. “At the minimum we would hope they would get Tesla to stop issuing advertisements in the form they are currently doing.”

“Tesla fails to provide required information and shatters the notion of comparison finance shopping by including the potential availability of incentives,” said the group in its complaint, “gas savings, and tax savings into final payment quotes for prospective customers.

The Times also updated its piece with counterpoint views by Rosemary Shahan, president of Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety in Sacramento.

“They want you to have to go to the dealer where they will mark up your loan, do bait-and-switch financing and engage in all sorts of practices that I am far more concerned about,” said Shahan.

Shahan said also that the dealer group did not estimate a dollar value for which California consumers were being gypped, and said “without seeing any numbers it is hard to say how concerned we should be about Tesla’s advertising.”

Further, Tesla is not unique in the questionable practice of shaving off the full federal tax credit in advertising the net price of an electric car.

Nissan does it with its Leaf, and Chevrolet has essential said as much for its Spark EV for example.

Tesla declined to comment on the allegations.

LA Times

Posted in News

Tagged as California New Car Dealers Association, Elon Musk, Model S, Tesla, Tesla dealer association

Related Readings

2013 Tesla Model S Overview

Since its launch in June of 2012 Tesla Motors’ groundbreaking Model S sedan has received lavish praise by nearly

Tesla’s Model S Resale Value Raised; Lower Monthly Payments

Tesla Motors announced today that it is raising the Model S resale value guarantee. employees could use electric vehicles made by the company; a workplace charging network is being installed at nearly every Ford facility in the U.S. and Canada.

Ford said it plans to install electric vehicle charging stations at more than 50 of its company offices, product development campuses and manufacturing facilities. Installation will begin later this year and roll out across company facilities throughout 2014.

“Ford’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond our fuel-efficient vehicles to include our daily workplace,” said Mike Tinskey, Ford global director of Vehicle Electrification and Infrastructure. “We know that a growing electrified vehicle infrastructure is key to making plug-in vehicles a viable option for more consumers. Ford is committed to doing our part to help grow that infrastructure.”

Ford employees will be able to charge the all-electric Focus Electric, as well as Ford’s two plug-in hybrids – the Fusion Energi and C-MAX Energi – at the charging stations. The service will initially be free to employees daily for the first four hours.

Ford estimates it will cost the company about 50 cents to fully charge a vehicle, saving employees up to $2 in gasoline each day.

According to Ford, its workplace EV chargers are different from competitor programs in that they will be networked together. As a result, the company will be able to gather additional information on electrified vehicle use, such as the number of hours vehicles are charging and the amount of CO2 reduced.

Ford already has more than 1,700 charging stations at Ford dealerships and company facilities in North America. The new workplace chargers will add approximately 200 more.

Throughout the U.S. and Canada, the number of charge stations – both public and residential – is growing rapidly. In 2009, there were 3,000 known public charging stations. Today, there are more than 20,000.

At the same time, the company revealed that Ford Fusion Energi and C-MAX Energi drivers typically make three of their four daily trips in all-electric mode, based on data from the MyFord Mobile app. In fact, every 10 days, Ford customers altogether drive approximately 1 million miles on electricity alone. In total, Ford said its customers now have logged 30 million all-electric miles driving the full range of plug-in vehicles, saving more than 1.2 million kilograms of CO2.

Considering current customer data from the Fusion Energi and CMAX Energi is showing that three of every four trips are accomplished on electricity alone, Ford believes that by adding another charge during the day at the workplace, it is likely that employees will be able to accomplish all of their work week trips without using gasoline.

Ford qualifies what is happening in electrified vehicle sales as a sales success.

The popularity of Ford’s electrified vehicles led to the company’s best-ever retail U.S. sales results for Fusion Energi and C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid vehicles in August. That contributed to Ford’s best August electrified vehicle sales ever, with 8,292 vehicles sold, up 288 percent over the same period a year ago.

August also marked the 11th consecutive month Ford achieved electrified vehicle sales records. electric car in the mid-$30,000 range to be built a few years hence, and now General Motors says it too is working on a similar performing EV for $30,000.

This is according to a report today citing a talk with GM’s Vice President of Global Product Development Doug Parks who – unlike Tesla – has not committed to when or if the global automaker will build one.

Tesla has said it will shoot for 2016 or perhaps a year or two later. Parks said only GM’s engineers are working on similar performance parameters, they already have technology to match the $71,000 Tesla Model S, but want it much cheaper.

Among all-electric cars, Currently GM is only marketing its Spark EV in Oregon and California. This torquey 119 MPGe subcompact offers an estimated 82 miles range and costs around $27,495 before subsidies.

Parks said there is a race among itself and automakers beyond Tesla and despite lacking many specifics, he suggested GM will not be left behind.

Yahoo

Posted in News

Tagged as aer, chevrolet electric car, Doiug Cars for 2013 list. A total of nine brands are represented on the list; Honda and Toyota led the pack with four vehicles each – followed by Ford, with three vehicles that earned the accolade.

Top in the hybrid segment is the 2006-2011 Toyota Prius, which is explained as follow on Edmunds’ Web site:

After testing the waters with the cramped first-generation Prius, Toyota pulled out all the stops with its second-generation hybrid, which debuted for 2004. That established the template for this iconic hybrid car. The Prius’ snub-nosed hatchback design devotes most of the car’s body length to passenger and cargo space. The result is a large cabin that provides midsize-sedan room within a compact footprint, making the Prius a snap to park in tight spaces.

The following generation, which debuted in 2010, continued the successful four-door hatchback formula, adding a more conventional center stack design and providing more comfort for taller owners via a height-adjustable driver seat and telescoping steering wheel adjustment. Of course, no matter what Prius you choose, it will get excellent fuel economy. Thankfully, that frugality doesn’t come at the expense of respectable performance, as there is more than adequate power on tap for dealing with city traffic as well as passing and merging on the freeway.

“There are a lot of popular cars on this list, and that’s not a surprise,” says Edmunds.com Editor in Chief Scott Oldham. “Wider availability of a particular vehicle almost always translates to more competitive prices and better value for used car shoppers.”

Edmunds.com’s annual 2013 Best Used Cars selections are based on vehicle reliability, safety, value and availability.

Edmunds.com editors considered their own professional experiences with the cars and examined consumer ratings, NHTSA and IIHS crash test results, and Edmunds.com’s True Market Value (TMV) prices and True Cost to Own (TCO) data. Eligibility was limited to 2006-2011 model year vehicles with model year vehicles.

The full list of segment winners is as follow:

Subcompact Sedan: 2007-2011 Honda Fit

Compact Sedan: 2006-2011 Hyundai Elantra

Midsize Sedan: 2007-2011 Ford Fusion

Large Sedan: 2006-2011 Toyota Avalon

Coupe: 2006-2011 Honda Accord

Convertible: 2006-2011 Volvo C70

Wagon: 2006-2011 Subaru Outback

Compact SUV/Crossover: 2006-2011 Honda CR-V

Midsize SUV/Crossover: 2006-2011 Toyota Highlander

Large SUV/Crossover: 2007-2011 Mazda CX-9

Minivan/Van: 2006-2011 Honda Odyssey

Compact Truck: 2006-2011 Toyota Tacoma

Large Truck: 2006-2011 Ford F-150

Luxury: 2006-2011 Infiniti G35/G37/G25

Hybrid: 2006-2011 Toyota Prius

Two-Seat Sports Car: 2006-2011 Chevrolet Corvette

Performance Car: 2006-2011 Ford Mustang GT

Posted in Buying Decision, Buying Guide, Carmakers, Market & Fleets, Compacts & Sedans, Hybrid, News, Toyota

Tagged as 2006-2011 prius, best used cars for 2013, best used hybrid for 2013, Hybrid, Prius, Toyota Prius

Related Readings

London Hybrid Double-Decker Launch Gets Off to a Bumpy Start

London Mayor Boris Johnson took a ride on one of his city’s brand new, emissions-slashing double-deckers

Meineke And Echo To Work Together To Convert Existing Vehicles To Hybrids

You will soon be able to have your vehicle converted to a hybrid at Meineke centers. The unique basic design was even registered as 'design patent'.

Based on the Alfa Romeo 1900 C, the car received a new tubular chassis and a lightweight, striking and aerodynamically-efficient aluminium body. The briefing at Carrozzeria Touring mentioned the need for a shape that was 'insensitive to wind'.

Initially aimed at sports car racing, the C52 Disco Volante is one of the best illustrations of the credo of Touring's founder Felice Bianchi Anderloni "Il peso è il nemico, la resistenza dell'aria è l'ostacolo" (Weight is the enemy, air resistance the obstacle).

DESIGN

The Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring celebrates the myth of the 1952 style icon. The new design blends innovation, emotion and aerodynamic properties into a timeless and essential shape.

While some elements are inspired by the original dramatic form and proportions, the new body also quite futuristic with its unusually wide front wings covering the wheels, and the thin rear end encapsulated in powerful shoulders.

Inside, the 2013 Disco Volante continues the car's design philosophy with a 'science fiction' feel including red LED interior light profiles. Aeronautical-inspired touches also feature on the dashboard, instruments and controls as exemplified by the seat adjustment lever.

The bespoke leather hides for the upholstery were manufactured to match the exterior body shade and these are matched with black AlcantaraTM. Naturally, buyers can personalise the interior design to meet their preferences.

DYNAMICS

The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione chassis forms the basis for the coach-built bodywork of the Disco Volante, integrally conserving the rolling chassis and drive train.

Chosen for its light and rigid structure and outstanding dynamic properties, the Alfa 8C's steel space-frame and other structural elements were retained to guarantee torsional stiffness, high performance and the highest possible quality standards.

The frame members and the central carbon cell remained unchanged. Elements of the underpinning and the body, such as the engine bay and firewall, the windscreen and cowl, the A-pillar and the locks and hinges have been retained too, along with the dashboard, instruments, pedals and steering wheel. Certain parts, such as the doorframes, roof frame and C-pillar have been modified to match with the new shape.

The front-central mounted engine, transaxle transmission and rear-wheel drive layout offers optimal weight distribution of 49:51 front to rear. To ensure excellent handling the front and rear double-wishbone suspension is combined with forged aluminium hub carriers and additional trailing arms for the rear suspension.

The lightweight and compact 4.7 litre V8 engine delivers 450HP and 480Nm peak torque and is coupled with a six-speed, sequential transaxle gearbox with electronic control and paddle-shift gear selection. Together with a limited-slip differential and a state-of-the-art braking system with large diameter, ventilated discs, a precise, dynamic and exciting drive is assured.

ENGINEERING

All new and modified components of the Disco Volante have been CAD designed, using the most advanced IT tools and simulation techniques to cover feasibility, safety, homologation, aerodynamics and structural analysis.

To ensure torsional stiffness and noise reduction, special attention was paid to the under-body structure and its elements, such as the tubular frames supporting the rear wings and bumper, and the roll bar joining the C-pillars. Other complex design issues include the tailgate hinges, the 3D-cambered door window, and the front wheel covers.

A CFD aerodynamic study enhanced the airflow and ensured optimal downforce in the rear section. FEM calculations were then run to assess resistance and rigidity of all parts subject to homologation.

PRODUCTION

To ensure lightweight bodywork for the Disco Volante, a combination of aluminium and carbon fibre was used for the optimal balance of weight, resistance, precision, finish and quality, as well as ease of repair in case of damage.

The carbon fibre is used for specific components like the front bumper and grille, the bonnet, the side skirts, the boot lid and the integrated rear-window frame. The bonnet and boot lid are sandwich-built with Nomex filler to obtain a superior stiffness/weight ratio and to dampen vibration and noise.

The aluminium panels are hand-formed using an epoxy mould. Since the inner frames of most parts of the bodywork are made of carbon fibre, this requires the gluing of aluminium to carbon fibre. This technique adds to the rigidity as the glue itself also possesses structural properties.

The body panels are pre-assembled on a laser measurement platform using a jig. This ensures that the strict tolerance required is respected. After adjustment, the panels are either welded or glued. The body-in-white is then used to preassemble and fit all trim components, brightware and moulding.

To ensure constant and repeatable quality, the entire production process is documented and digitally logged. Like in series production, there is a quantified manufacturing cycle and a Bill of Materials. Tolerances, measurements and other quality standards are all quantified.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

The quality control process includes static as well as dynamic test runs before the car is signed off. The static-test protocol requires compliance to high standards in interstice and surface alignment, paint and coating quality, interior trim and assembly.

A functionality test is run in a climatic chamber.
