Emerg-e Wins Design Award

The Infiniti Emerg-e has won a prestigious award from the German Design Council. The concept car, launched at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, was announced today as the winner in the Concepts category of the Automotive Brand Contest 2012, the international competition for automotive brands and now a major industry event.



The Infiniti Emerg-e is the brand’s first range-extended, mid-engined electric sports car concept.



The award, which will be presented in a ceremony at Paris’ Mondial de L’Automobile, on September 27, recognizes excellence and innovation in product design, and celebrates the brand’s fresh, fluent design approach, expressed in the highly aerodynamic curves of the Infiniti Emerg-e.



This is the latest milestone to be achieved by this sports car. Infiniti sees this as physical proof of the company’s intention to produce a bold halo model befitting the brand’s promise of Inspired Performance.



In June, a fully functioning prototype version of the Infiniti Emerg-e made its global debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, driven by Red Bull Racing Formula 1 driver, Mark Webber.



Infiniti says the Emerg-e provides a glimpse into Infiniti’s future and features new technologies that the brand will adopt in its quest to build dramatic and sustainable high performance cars.



The first Infiniti to be developed in Europe, the concept has evolved through Infiniti’s partnership with the UK government’s Technology Strategy Board (TSB) initiative, whose aim is to speed the arrival of low carbon vehicles to our roads. The partial-funding from the TSB has significantly deepened the resource that the Infiniti can draw upon in the development of Emerg-e and technology relevant for the future of the automobile.

Ford Compares Mars Rover EV to its Raptor Pickup

This may seem like more than a slight stretch for some of you, but Ford had fun comparing two American innovators in go-anywhere capability – the gas-powered 2013 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor and NASA’s nuclear-electric-powered Mars Rover Curiosity.



The included infographic creates an unlikely face off in a comparison of, as Ford dubs it, “awesome off-road hardware.”



Each vehicle represents, according to Ford, the pinnacle of high-tech mobility on Earth and Mars.




Yes, and that’s where we’ll leave the imaginative marketing comparison contrived by the automaker, and branch a little far afield of our usual coverage to briefly overview one truly advanced electric vehicle which is more an autonomous traveling laboratory.



NASA's Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover, known as Mars Rover Curiosity, is a mobile robot for investigating Mars' past or present ability to sustain microbial life.



The Curiosity is scheduled to land near the Martian equator about 10:31 p.m., Aug. 5 PDT (1:31 a.m. Aug. 6 EDT).



In the artist’s rendition provided by NASA, the rover examines a rock on Mars with a set of tools at the end of the rover's arm, which extends about 7 feet (2 meters). Two instruments on the arm can study rocks up close. A drill can collect sample material from inside of rocks and a scoop can pick up samples of soil. The arm can sieve the samples and deliver fine powder to instruments inside the rover for thorough analysis.



The mast, or rover's "head," rises to about 6.9 feet (2.1 meters) above ground level. This mast supports two remote-sensing science instruments: the Mast Camera, or "eyes," for stereo color viewing of surrounding terrain and material collected by the arm; and, the Chemistry and Camera instrument, which uses a laser to vaporize a speck of material on rocks up to about 23 feet (7 meters) away and determines what elements the rocks are made of.




The size of a car or small SUV, the rover weighs nearly a ton and its scientific payload is 10 times more massive than the instrument sets taken to Mars by previous rovers.



Because of its ambitious mission, the Curiosity rover was designed for a more powerful energy source than solar arrays, the technology used on the previous rovers. The Department of Energy built for NASA a nuclear-powered electrical system instead, called a multi-mission radioisotope thermoelectric generator, or MMRTG. It has no moving parts, but converts heat from a small core of plutonium into about 110 watts of electricity around-the-clock and all year.

Each of Curiosity's six wheels has an independent drive motor. The two front and two rear wheels also have individual steering motors. This steering allows the rover to make 360-degree turns in-place on the Mars surface. The wheels' diameter is double the wheel diameter on Spirit and Opportunity, which will help Curiosity roll over obstacles up to 75 centimeters (30 inches) high.



NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, manages the Mars Science Laboratory Project for the NASA Science Mission Directorate, Washington.






BMW dealer sends armed tracker team with helicopter backup to recover loaner car

BMW dealers in South Africa put Dog The Bounty Hunter to shame – they've got support from Airwolf.

According to IOL Motoring, when a dealer's attempts to get back a BMW 325 loaner car were rebuffed by a customer, Ravindra Jainarain, the dealer took matters into his own hands. He hired an armed team of professional repo men complete with helicopter backup. The group stormed the customer's place of work in Durban, South Africa, guns drawn, demanding he surrender the keys to the loaner car as a Netstar helicopter hovered overhead.

The man quickly handed over the keys and then called his lawyer.

A judge ruled almost as quickly that the dealer had to give the car back to customer, who was waiting to hear if his 320d would be replaced (as requested) or fixed because of inoperable air conditioning. (He was appealing the first decision.) Both sides now have another 30 days to prepare their cases for court.

In the meantime, Airwolf will remain grounded.

2013 Malibu Eco Sales Hit by Old Model Discounts

Chevrolet’s Malibu Eco, the mild hybrid, which represents the first of the 2013 Malibu models, is facing stiff competition, from the old conventional 2012 version.



With incentives on the 2012 to help dealers clear out old inventory, the new Eco, on sale since March, hasn’t got off to a good start, especially since it costs around $6,000 more than the old model.



Furthermore, with the base model will not be available until later this month and has been criticized for its cost and performance compared to “true” hybrid versions of such cars as the Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata, and Toyota Camry. The Malibu is EPA rated at 29 mpg combined versus the Ford Fusion’s 39, Hyundai Sonata’s 37 and Camry Hybrid’s 41 mpg. What’s more, it’s only around $600 cheaper than the current Sonata Hybrid and its cousin, the Kia Optima Hybrid.



Additionally, with base models of these other cars, nearing the Malibu Eco’s fuel economy numbers (the regular Camry, Optima and Sonata get 28 mpg combined) and costing significantly less (well over $3,000 in most cases), GM’s strategy of introducing the Eco model six months before the conventional Malibu is so far proving to be more a hindrance than a benefit.



However, despite around 7,000 Eco models being sold from March through June, versus some 10,000 2012 Malibus, GM says sales are meeting expectations. Chevrolet’s director of marketing, Russ Clark, recently said, “the car’s performing about where we thought it would.”



If the base, 2.5-engine 2013 Malibu is able to deliver similar fuel economy numbers to the Camry and Sonata and also it’s Eco sister, things aren’t likely to bode well for the latter, especially given current economic conditions, where many car shoppers are looking to stretch a buck that much further.



However, Clark said the base Malibu won’t incorporate the same level of content as the Eco, which comes standard with the MyLink info entertainment system among other things. Still, if consumers continue to emphasize price (which means dealers will be less likely to sell more highly optioned models) and the popularity of full hybrids continues to grow, then its likely cars such as the Malibu Eco will have a rather short shelf life.

Toyota Looking Toward Greater Fuel Efficiency

Is a diesel half-ton in the offing?



With Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards weighing heavily on the minds of automakers, many are looking at a multitude of ways to boost gas mileage and efficiency.



However, when it comes to conventional powertrains, Toyota; appears to be lagging behind many rivals who’ve been adding such features as turbocharging, direct injection, continuously variable transmissions, diesels and lightweight engines, all as measures to boost fuel economy.



However, to be fair, Toyota has been suffering setbacks, in the form of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan last year, which significantly hampered the global supply chain, disrupting production and volume. More recently, a high-profile “unintended acceleration,” probe tied up resources that otherwise would have been allocated to powertrain development.



Nevertheless, with production having ramped up significantly and quality improving, Toyota is planning to tackle the fuel economy issue via turbocharging and possibly diesel engines, in an effort to catch up with major rivals. However, in the short term, the automaker plans to make its U.S. lineup more efficient via aerodynamics and gearing, an example being the 2013 Toyota Corolla, which has received mild styling enhancements and a new transmission.



On the truck front, given Ford’s success with the EcoBoost V6 in its F-150, rivals are scrambling to follow suit with more fuel-efficient powertrains. Given Toyota’s tie-in with heavy Japanese truck manufacturer Hino, a diesel engine in the full-size Tundra and even the smaller Tacoma might be seen as logical. Toyota offers diesel pickups in other markets; therefore providing such an oil-burning unit that is able to meet EPA standards, would be seen as a trump card, especially as none of its U.S. based rivals plan to offer half-ton diesel pickups, at least in the near term.
