2013 Nissan Sentra priced from $15,990*

It has been five years since the last major redesign of the Nissan Sentra. Nissan showed the world its new, elegant design just over a month ago, and now we have been clued into the Sentra's pricing.

Anyone looking to get their hands on a 2013 Nissan Sentra, in base "S 6MT" trim, will have to spend $15,990 (not including a destination charge, which has not yet been specified, though is likely to run $760 as on the '13 Altima). If you'd like the base S model with the Xtronic CVT transmission it will run you $17,260,

The Sentra comes with a 1.8-liter inline-4 making 130 horsepower and 128 pound feet of torque. All models, save for the S 6MT, send power to the front wheels through the CVT transmission, offering fuel economy of 30 miles per gallon city, 39 highway. Those looking to take advantage of the 40 mpg highway in the S FE+ model will have to throw down $17,660. There is also a mid-pack FE+ SV trim, which fetches $18,870.

If you'd like the SR trim be prepared to spend $18,870. The range topping SL features heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals, push-button start, dual zone automatic climate control and Bluetooth hands-free connectivity at a price of $19,760.

A Navigation Package offers NissanConnect voice recognition, touch-screen NAV system, backup camera, Pandora web radio capability and hands-free text messaging. A Premium Package provides Power sliding moon rood and Bose premium audio system with eight speakers. Pricing has not yet been announced for these options packages, however.

To compare: the 2013 Hyundai Elantra costs $16,695 for the base GLS, and $20,945 for the Limited, though there are far less tim options than the Sentra. The 2012 Honda Civic starts at $15,955 for a DX model, while an EX-L with navigation is $23,605.

Mitsubishi Unveils Production Outlander PHEV in Paris

Mitsubishi says all specs are subject to final homologation, and we've reported this vehicle before, but we're including more details, images, and a video of the essentially showroom-ready plug-in hybrid now making its world debut.


At long last, Mitsubishi’s production-destined 2013 Outlander plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is making its world premiere in Paris, offering an estimated 35 miles all-electric range, and four-wheel drive capability.



Performance estimates including all-electric range, total gas-electric traveling range of over 547 miles (880 km), fuel consumption of over 145 mpg (61 km/l) are based on the liberal Japanese JC08 test cycle. The vehicle’s CO2 emissions rating of under 49 g/km was measured on the EU cycle.



The Outlander’s 2.0-liter engine, 70-kw generator, front and rear electric motors, and 12-kwh battery will no doubt offer less all-electric range and efficiency ratings when measured by the U.S. EPA.




As previously reported, it can operate as a pure EV, series or parallel hybrid when switched into these respective modes. Absolute top speed when using the ICE is 106 mph (170 kph). Top speed in EV mode is 75 mph.



Pricing and launch dates are unknown as of yet for the SUV which was designed from the ground up, says Mitsu, as “an engineering feat” to accept a variety of powertrain options from petrol or diesel internal combustion engine (ICE) to PHEV as being discussed.



So the company’s first plug-in hybrid is no conversion, it says. This is a fully engineered essentially modular solution.




Mitsu further says the EV-based architecture does away with the traditional format of engine plus gearbox plus final drive for a “purer” layout of (front to rear). As you can see in the video below, its layout is as follows:



• Front engine: the 2.0-liter mill is located on the right side of the same engine compartment as the new Outlander ICE variants.


• Front (60 kw) motor plus inverter plus generator: located on the left side of the engine compartment with the engine, transaxle style.


• Drive battery pack: stored (safely) under floor within the wheelbase not to affect interior space.


• Rear (60kw) motor plus inverter: located under floor not to intrude in the cargo area.




The company says this layout features neither conventional gearbox nor driveshaft. The system is electronically-controlled while the petrol engine activates the front wheels (in Parallel Hybrid Mode) through a gear train. The Outlander PHEV's primary motive force comes from the front and rear electric motors as in a 100-percent EV permanent 4WD vehicle.



Further Features:



• Mitsubishi Motors' PHEV system uses a newly developed twin-motor four-wheel-drive system mated to Mitsubishi's S-AWC ("Super All Wheel Control"). Based on the four-wheel-drive technology developed and honed in the Lancer Evolution, S-AWC it integrates control of the 4WD, ASC and ABS systems. Working in tandem with the PHEV system.



• The two motors drive the front and rear axles independently. Being virtually lag-free and offering superior control, the motors ensure finer more precise control of the 4WD system. The Twin Motor 4WD system does away with the propeller shaft, hydraulic system and clutch plate used to connect the front and rear axles in conventional 4WD systems.



• In addition to the obvious active safety of such a sophisticated 4WD drivetrain, the Mitsubishi PHEV system gives the 100-percent instant off-the-line torque inherent to electric motors - with acceleration comparable to that of a 3.0-liter V6 engine - while its twin electric motor will guarantee the smooth progression required in difficult wintery driving conditions.





As a result, says Mitsubishi, the vehicle's powertrain combination of front electric motor plus rear electric motor plus front petrol engine plus generator translates into a choice of three driving modes, as mentioned:



Pure EV (Twin Motor 4WD EV):



• The car is driven by the two electric motors, the energy being supplied from the drive battery pack.



• With a top speed of over 120 km/h (where legal) and a range of over 55 km, Outlander PHEV can fulfill daily family duties with the lowest possible impact (below 49 g/km - EU standard).



Series Hybrid (Twin Motor 4WD EV supported by ICE generator):



• When the energy remaining in the drive battery is low or when the need arises for a sudden acceleration, the two electric motors take their power from the battery AND from the generator.


• In this configuration, the generator helps 1) with the charging of the drive battery and 2) with the motors.


• The petrol engine is not engaged.




Parallel Hybrid (petrol engine supported by Twin Motor 4WD):



• Outlander PHEV now uses its resources to the full for the open road:


o Petrol engine driving the front wheels through a gear train


o Twin electric motors supporting seamlessly at the front and the rear


o Generator distributing additional torque which comes out to enhance engine efficiency, and saving the electricity of the drive battery

The company is touting the New Outlander PHEV's smooth driveline, and smooth aerodynamic form (for an SUV) to reduce noise, vibration and harshness.



It will offer a “family feeling” user experience, launch in a Technical Silver color with 18-inch alloy wheels, 225/55R18 low-friction tires, and color-keyed bumpers.



Inside will be visual cues and styling that include a “unique accent panel, high contrast meter with power meter, joy stick-type shift knob, etc.”

5,000 EVs Confirmed For Hangzou Out Of 20,000 Projected

Kandi Technologies, Corp. announced today that its wholly owned subsidiary, Zhejiang Kandi Vehicles Co., Ltd. (“Kandi Vehicles”) has signed a sales contract with China Aviation Lithium Battery (Hangzhou) Co., Ltd. (CALB Hangzou) to provide the first 5,000 EVs for the Hangzou EV project.



This follows the July 10 signature of a letter of intent between Zhejiang Kandi Vehicles Co., Ltd. and CALB at the Cooperation Forum in Beijing to collaboratively promote 20,000 pure electrical vehicles in Hangzhou, Zhejiang.



Today’s signature officially pushes forward the first 5,000 units of what is currently known as the largest pure EV commercialization launch in China.



According to the July letter of intent between Kandi Vehicles and CALB for the purpose of promoting the 20,000 pure EV leasing program in Hangzhou, CALB established a wholly owned subsidiary, CALB Hangzhou Coin Hangzhou city to specifically facilitate the implementation of the leasing program.



CALB Hangzhou will be responsible for the operation of the Hangzhou project. In furtherance of the letter of intent, on Sept. 29, 2012, Kandi Vehicles and CALB Hangzhou entered into a definitive sales contract.



Both parties revealed the principal provisions of the contract as follows:



1. CALB Hangzhou will purchase 5,000 JNJ6290EV model pure electric vehicles (without batteries) from Kandi Vehicles and the total purchase price will be RMB 199,000,000 (approximately $31.58 million). The unit price without the battery is at RMB39,800 (approximately $6,317).



2. Under the sales contract, the temporarily scheduled deliveries of the 5,000 vehicles will occur from Sept. 29 to Dec. 31, 2012.



3. Kandi Vehicles will deliver the vehicles upon receipt of a written confirmation notice and full payment of CALB Hangzhou. The orders will be delivered in several installments. Kandi Vehicles is obligated to deliver the ordered EVs to the designated places in Hangzhou City within 7 business days upon receiving the confirmatory notice and the payment.



4. Kandi Vehicles will ensure that the electric vehicles meet the strict quality standards and technical parameters of Chinese Government and CALB. For instance, Kandi Vehicles' EV must be on the list of "Approved Passenger Vehicles" and "Recommended Models for Energy Saving/New Energy Vehicle Demonstration and Promotion in China" of Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.



5. Kandi Vehicles will ensure that the electric vehicles in the contract meet all the technical requirements for the existing and future battery charging/exchanging infrastructures, such as the Quick Battery Exchange (QBE) stations that are in construction by State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC).



6. Kandi Vehicles will provide necessary post-sale customer service, training and maintenance for the Hangzhou EV leasing program.






Audi Podium Duo In Bahrain

Audi’s R18 e-tron quattro scored a one-two podium victory during Bahrain’s six hour race on Saturday Sept. 29.



McNish and regular co-driver Tom Kristensen (Den) steered their Audi R18 e-tron quattro home one-lap behind race winners and championship leaders Marcel Fässler (CH)/André Lotterer (D)/Benoît Tréluyer (F) in their similar “factory” hybrid-diesel Audi.



The 641.76-mile race staged at the 3.36-mile Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir ran mainly in darkness but humid 35°C ambient temperatures and marked the first race for McNish and the “factory” Audi Sport team in Bahrain.



“Congratulations to Audi for our 1-2 result here in Bahrain,” said McNish. “It was a very hot race in more senses than just the ambient temperature. We had a brake problem early on that caused excess tire wear so we had to change the rear tail section. We also had a few other minor problems with lights resulting in the need for the front bodywork to be changed which effectively put us completely out of contention.”



McNish began from pole-position – his second “pole” of the year – on the 28-car grid after the Scotsman’s efforts in qualifying the previous day with the similar Audi of Fässler/Lotterer/Tréluyer alongside on the front row and the Alex Wurz/Nicolas Lapierre (Toyota) third.



The R18 e-tron quattro is powered by a V6 turbo diesel engine delivering around 510 horsepower through the rear wheels, it benefits briefly from an extra near 200 hp, transmitted only through its front axle above 75 mph, at specific “zones” using power “harvested” under braking.



The penultimate round of the WEC is staged at Mount Fuji in Japan on Sunday Oct. 14.

Toyota Boss: Hybrids and Fuel Cells Are Future; EVs Are Not

Toyota Motor Europe CEO Didier Leroy this week reiterated the message emanating from the top that plug-in hybrids make more sense than pure electric, and hydrogen fuel cells will prove even more promising not long from now.



This word came from Paris Motor Show and follows a talk given in Japan by the “father of the Prius,” Takeshi Uchiyamada, that battery powered cars starting with Toyota’s tiny iQ EV have too many downsides to be worthwhile.



“We have seen that customers are not yet willing to compromise on range and they don’t like the time needed to re-charge the batteries,” said Leroy. “So even if we are ready with our production version of the iQ EV we think a plug-in hybrid solution offers a better way than pure
electric for most customers needs.”



Toyota is nonetheless showing the iQ EV at Paris having gone to so much trouble as to build it only to sideline it, but it is also showing its growing bread-and-butter Hybrid Synergy line, and talking up vehicles like the pending FCV-R hydrogen fuel cell concept unveiled last year in Tokyo.



While he said EVs are “full of uncertainty,” fuel cell vehicles were portrayed as “the ultimate eco car.”



“Our fuel cell car will emit no harmful emissions at all and will have a driving range of around 700 kms (435 miles).”




It’s not as though Toyota cannot see what Nissan is doing with its Leaf, it’s more that it does not want to sign onto growing a small effort it believes will be supplanted by fuel cells in a few years anyway.



In the meantime, Toyota knows its hybrids are top sellers, believes 10-15 miles electric range offered by its plug-in Prius is “the best of both worlds” and enough for 70 percent of Europeans.



Leroy said Toyota is content to keep majoring on these kinds of transportation solutions, and let the EV market be developed by others.


“We believe it is much better to sell larger numbers of accessible low emission cars than very few with zero emissions,” Leroy said.
