Europe is getting a wagon hybrid version of the Toyota’s new Auris.
The new, British-built Auris Touring Sports introduces a station wagon body style to Toyota’s Auris range for the first time.
Toyota also said it is the first model in its class to offer the choice of a full hybrid powertrain, marking further diversification of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive technology.
The Auris Touring Sports carries its hybrid battery under the rear seats; this results in no compromise in the size of the cargo space and its luggage capacity.
Toyota believes the new model will broaden the appeal of the Auris and is expected to help increase the model’s European segment share to more than 5 percent by 2014, its first full year of sales.
The Auris Touring Sports is built exclusively by Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK (TMUK) at its factory in Burnaston, Derbyshire, alongside the Auris hatchback and Avensis models.
The Auris nameplate replaced the Corolla nameplate on European markets and often shares components with the Corolla sold in North America. This fact has many believing the new generation of Auris vehicles give more than a hint as to what we will see in the future North American Corolla.
The Auris Touring Sports has the same 2,600 mm (102 inches) wheelbase as its sister hatchback, but is 285 mm (11.22 inches) longer overall. The extra length is totally dedicated to the trunk space.
The Auris Touring Sports will be available in the UK with the same powertrain options as the hatchback version: a 1.33-liter Dual VVT-i and 1.6-liter Valvematic gas units; the 1.4-liter D-4D diesel; and full hybrid.
The full hybrid’s Hybrid Synergy Drive system features a 1.8-liter VVT-i petrol engine and an electric motor, giving a maximum power output of 134 horsepower (100 kilowatt). This enables zero to 62 mph acceleration in 10.9 seconds and a top speed of 112 mph.
