Yesterday, Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide, Inc. announced delivery of its first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle to Florida Power & Light Company (FPL).
The pilot version of the PHEV is in association with lithium-ion battery system supplier, Dow Kokam, and based on a Ford F-150.
"We are pleased to announce the first delivery of this exciting plug-in hybrid electric F-150 truck," said Brian Olson, CEO of Quantum. "In partnership with Dow Kokam, we have developed a truly innovative, unique and durable solution that provides significant advantages for fleets and utilities looking to substantially reduce their operating costs as well as their carbon footprint."
FPL was a natural choice for the pilot project as it already operates what is described as “one of the largest greenest fleets of any investor-owned utility in the country.”
The F-150 is powered by Quantum's "F-Drive" parallel plug-in hybrid electric drive system. The F-Drive allows the first 35 miles to be run with all-electric drive and then switches to hybrid mode.
Quantum says it achieves 100-plus mpg depending on drive cycle and charging frequency.
The vehicle uses "fully-integrated and safety-tested" lithium-ion energy storage systems from Dow Kokam.
Beyond this one truck, Quantum's portfolio of technologies includes electronic and software controls, hybrid electric drive systems, natural gas and hydrogen storage and metering systems and other alternative fuel technologies and solutions.
Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies' customer base includes automotive OEMs, fleets, aerospace industry, military and other governmental agencies, and other strategic alliance partners. It is headquartered in Irvine, Calif., and has operations and affiliations in the U.S., Canada, Germany and India.
