Zero-emission vehicles will have a role to play at the upcoming United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development - also known as Rio+20 - in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

From June 13-22, a fleet of electric vehicles from the Renault-Nissan Alliance - Nissan LEAF, Renault Kangoo Z.E. and Renault Fluence Z.E. - will be used for shuttling UN delegates in and around the city. The vehicles will also be made available to the delegates for test driving.

Rio+20 is expected to bring more than 50,000 delegates, including world leaders and participants from governments, the private sector, NGOs and other groups, together to discuss how to reduce poverty, advance social equity and ensure environmental protection in an ever more crowded planet.

Toshiyuki Otani, Alliance managing director and senior vice president of Nissan’s Global Zero Emissions Business Unit and Battery Business Unit, will also highlight the benefits of zero-emission mobility at a Global Forum on Electric Mobility on June 18.

It’s all part of a big EV push by the Alliance in South America which has seen Memorandums of Understanding signed with authorities in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Mexico and Puerto Rico to study how electric vehicles can preserve the environment and improve the quality of city life.
