Overall, U.S. vehicle sales declined from March to April, but the decline in alternative vehicle sales was less than the whole market.
Compared to overall vehicle sales, hybrid and plug-in vehicles did better and both compared to last month and year-ago levels. Diesel sales actually had a poor month, trailing the results of the overall market.
While Leaf sales declined from the all-time high set in March, the volume was still strong resulting in Nissan’s second-best month, and Leaf sales are expected to increase in coming months.
The Volt has sold relatively consistent over previous months, and we expect that additional marketing of the Leaf which has just launched will result in more sales of the Volt as GM seeks to be competitive.
The Prius Plug-in, still only available in 15 states, is selling in lower volumes this year, in line with lower Prius volumes (and for that matter overall Toyota volumes) across its various versions. We expect Toyota to increase its marketing efforts, particularly in response to Nissan’s announcement that they will be reducing posted prices on many of its vehicles.
Our numbers for Tesla are estimated but note the Model S is leading the “Electric” chart for the month and year to date, due in no small part to Tesla having accrued a sizable backlog of orders thus its sales are only limited by production capacity. If the company could produce more, it’s not a stretch to conjecture we could hypothetically see 3,000 or 4,000 Model S sales for a couple months or more but of course that’s a moot statement; it will not happen due to production capability, but this is what we have with the phenomenon happening right now in Fremont, Calif.
The growth in the overall market in recent months has seen an increase in medium-sized sedan sales and crossovers, as well as pickup trucks. Alternative vehicle share in some of these segments is lower than in the smaller vehicle segment, with the result that these vehicle volumes are somewhat depressed. This is no doubt reinforced by the modest decline in gas prices in recent months.
The Fusion hybrid continues to perform well, with 15 percent of total vehicle sales (and a small number of additional plug-in hybrid sales). C-Max hybrid sales are relatively close to Fusion hybrid sales, with stronger C-Max Energi volumes (relative to the Fusion Energi). The Lincoln MKZ hybrid is now reaching showrooms and volumes should increase as sales of this delayed model increase.
Diesel volumes have been down, but the Cruze and Grand Cherokee diesels will arrive shortly, followed this fall by the Ram diesel.
