Discovery of a potential faulty circuit board unrelated to the battery pack has prompted General Motors to issue a recall for 38,197 eAssist-equipped cars.
Models affected include the 2012 and 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco, Buick LaCrosse and Regal eAssist models. These are U.S. market cars only, and recalled models are those assembled before December 2012.
eAssist models affected from GM notification.
The manufacturer says an indicator on the dash may light due to a malfunctioning Generator Control Module (GCM). If the light is ignored, GM says results could include the engine stalling up to emission of a melting odor, smoke, or even fire.
So far only one fire in the trunk has resulted, and no injuries were reported.
Plans are for GM to notify owners to take their cars to a dealer for inspection. A customer inquiry phone number – 1-800-521-7300 – is in place for customers to call with questions or concerns.
