In a typical case of “forbidden fruit,” Jeep is launching the revised Compass CUV with a diesel engine … but only for its European lineup.
Engines on the European 2014 Jeep Compass include a 2.2-liter turbo diesel engine delivering 161 horsepower and two gasoline part of Chrysler’s World Engines offering: the 2.4-liter that produces power of 168 horsepower and the 2.0-liter providing 154 horsepower.
These two latest are now available with a new to Europe six-speed PowerTech automatic transmission.
Developed by PowerTech, the 6F24 automatic transmission has been, according to Jeep Europe, refined for application to the 2014 Jeep Compass. Compact, lightweight and fully electronic, the new six-speed automatic gearbox was designed for improved performance, ensuring smooth and precise shifting and increased driving pleasure, per Jeep.
Identified by a CRD badge on the trunk, the diesel engine offered is a four-cylinder, 16 valves with a bore and stroke of 83 x 99 millimeters. Compression ration is of 16.2:1 and the fuel system is an electronically-controlled Delphi common rail system with high pressure direct injection solenoid injectors.
This diesel offers a fuel economy, according to Jeep’s UK consumer website, of 42.8 imperial mpg (35.64 U.S. mpg) on the combined cycle, or 47.9 imperial mpg (39.88 U.S. mpg) on the extra-urban cycle and 35.8 imperial mpg (29.8 U.S. mpg) on the urban cycle.
Wait a minute. Even though we are comparing apple and oranges because fuel consumption ratings are calculated differently in Europe and in the U.S., Chrysler may have more work to do on this one. Though good, this rating is not exceptionally stellar.
The revised 2014 Compass sees the same visual improvements as the 2013 North American versions received… We were first for that aspect!
