BMW has diesel models on their way to American shores, and front and center today in New York, it highlighted its 328d.
This car will be offered in a rear-wheel-drive, and xDrive all-wheel version, as well as a sport wagon. It was accompanied also by the Concept Active Tourer plug-in hybrid, and these offerings are said to highlight BMW’s statements that it intends to eliminate tradeoffs perceived in its products offering efficiency, “sustainability” and, of course, performance.
The 328d will feature a 2.0-liter twin turbo four cylinder that is said to deliver 180 horsepower, 280 pound-feet of torque, and 48 mpg.

BMW is also expected to bring a six-cylinder diesel to its 5-Series in the form of the 528d.

Also sharing stage room at the packed media presentation was BMW’s Active Tourer. The plug-in hybrid is not being announced as a pre-production model, but it well could be.
The hatchback design plug-in is powered by a 1.5-liter, transversely mounted 3-cylinder gas engine paired with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack which BMW says delivers up to 95 mpg.
Power is estimated at 190 horsepower with 0-62 mph time of under eight seconds with top speed of 124 mph.
Aside from a host of user interface connectivity inside, the tech-laden vehicle features such novelties as a suspended particle glass room which at the press of a button can transform from clear to opaque and back again.
BMW had this car locked up with two security guards on hand to make sure it remained hands off.
The company has for this car a dedicated Web page, and has been promoting it as a potential future offering.
In all, much positive talk was given by Ludwig Willisch, president and CEO, BMW of North America, on the company’s awareness of the need to become greener while improving its market position.
He said compromise would not be required in purchasing a BMW which will offer maximum performance and efficiency in one.

Naturally, with its high-performance models, the efficiency promised is a qualified term, but the word was BMW intends to kep raising the bar for its “ultimate driving machines” while introducing more “sustainable” designs intended to be at teh greener end of the spectrum, while retaining core BMW attributes.
The company has been acknowledged by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for eight years in a row, said Willisch, and more is yet to come.
