The newest iteration of Volkswagen’s iconic Golf was unveiled today in New York pending its launch as a 2015 model.
Highlighting various features of the updated design based on VW’s versatile “tool kit” MQB platform, Design Group head Walter de Silva promised an altogether improved lineup, including new clean diesel models. .
The Golf TDI Clean Diesel model will be powered by a new 2.0-liter common-rail, turbocharged, direct-injection diesel engine.
Internally designated the EA288, the TDI engine will be produced in Silao, Mexico, and promises 170 horsepower, 184-pound-feet torque routed through either a manual or automatic transmissions.
The company says this is equal in power and has seven additional pound-feet torque over the conventional 2.5-liter five cylinder
VW did not release estimated EPA efficiency numbers for the engine.
What was revealed was the new platform VW is very excited about, known as MQB.
This design dictates a fixed relationship between the front wheel centerline and the pedalbox, the car’s proportions have changed.
Now, for example, the front wheels are 1.7 inches further forward than on the current Golf design. RThe result is described as a “cab backward impression” in which the hood is longer and the passenger
compartment is further back, proportionally.
While still immediately recognizable as a Golf, the car also allows a 0.6-inch longer interior, albeit with a lower roofline. Front and rear legroom, elbow room and rear cargo capacity are incrementally increased.
For the first time, Volkswagen is using touchscreens with a proximity sensor, allowing drivers to change functions with a swipe of the hand, just like a smartphone.
The base radio has a 5.8-inch touchscreen. The new navigation systems are DVD-based with a 3D display.
Below this, the interface is logically laid out, tweaked for user friendliness. Soft touch materials as well as chrome, aluminum, and piano black surfaces are incorporated.
VW said pricing would be announced closer to time of launch.
